What Exactly is Viscose Fabric?

When you're shopping for clothes and accessories, every once in a while you're bound to run across a material you've never seen before. Amongst the many familiar cotton, wool and suede items, one of the more unusual fabric you might see is called viscose. What is viscose fabric? Read on to find out.

If you've heard of rayon before, then you have a pretty good idea of what viscose is, too. Viscose is a type of rayon, which is a synthetic fiber often use to make clothing items such as shirts, skirts and light jackets. It's a lightweight fabric, which means that the clothes made from it generally drape well and are suited to warmer temperatures. You'll see a lot of viscose and rayon fabrics used in spring and summer clothing.

Viscose is a great choice if you want clothing that drapes well and creates a flowing appearance over your body. Many lovely maxi dresses and skirts are made from viscose, and basic t-shirts made with this material, or a blend of viscose and cotton, are a good base layer for creating outfits of many styles. Viscose is easy to dye, so it comes in many colors and patterns.

The only downfall of viscose is that it does require careful maintenance. You should wash your viscose clothes gently in warm water and avoid twisting or wringing them, as this could stretch the delicate fabric. If the item becomes wrinkled, you can iron it to smooth it out. Use the medium setting with steam. Ironing on too hot a setting may scorch the fabric.

What is viscose fabric? It's an exciting addition to your wardrobe!
